Back in the early 80s, mild mannered reporter Somerset Mau Mau was quietly living his life in Marin County California when he answered an ad in a local newspaper. A fellow named R.U. Sirius was requesting help in putting together a psychedelic magazine. Well, Somerset knew a lot about that subject. As a matter of fact, he had a PhD in DMT. To make a long story short - yet ultimately more satisfying than a longer, wider story - Mau Mau did collaborate with R.U. Sirius to create High Frontiers: the Space Age Newspaper of Psychedelics, Science, Human Potential, Irreverence and Modern Art. The first issue was a knock-out collection of interviews with psychedelic luminaries, cogent reviews and parodies of stuff. All but a few copies of the First Issue were given away in an effort to tweek the paradigm. I guess it worked. If you are a Sirius collector, you NEED this issue of High Frontiers. So put down that latte, fire up the bong, and get ready for a flashback that will blow your mind! Please insert your cliche here >>

Featuring: Tim Leary, Albert Hofmann, Terence McKenna, Zippy, Jack Sarfatti, Peter Stafford, Andrew Weil, Paul Segall, Bruce Eisner, RU Sirius and Somerset Mau Mau.

This issue is important for several reasons, the main one being that it includes a funny piece about guru worship and XTC by Somerset Mau Mau. This issue is quite unusual, in that a color was missing from the palette. Can you tell which color? The advertiser on the back cover, the Psychedelic Shop, was not amused.

Featuring:
Beastie Boys, Best of the SF Oracle, Secret of the Grateful Dead, Todd Rundgren Meets the Hackers, Can Robots Feel Yet?, the CIA, LSD, and the Occult.

This is actually High Frontiers #6 but they changed the name to Reality Hackers to keep people guessing. Plus, I think the new drugs played a part. The work of Somerset Mau Mau is not included here, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it tremendously. Fun Fact: Most of the 75,000 printed were mistakenly distributed in the Deep South and so did not sell, but were pulped. Thus the rarity.

Featuring:
Adrian Belew, Sound/mind Discoveries, Vismusic and Chaos, Blue Oyster Cult, Hi-Tech Paganism, Heavy Metal Mythology.

What can I say? This is the premier issue of Mondo 2000 magazine. Apparently these are so rare that even the ones they printed and distributed are no longer in existence. They just dematerialized. I have one copy and it will go quickly, so order it while you can.

Featuring: Cyberpunks, Todd Rundgren, Tim Leary, William Gibson, Max Headroom, Virusgate, Future Media.

They used to pay me in Mondos back when I was making fun of them. I put those puppies in a trunk and I am only now - 20+ years later - diving into that trunk. I love nostalgia.

Featuring:
Camper Van Beethoven, SRL's Mark Pauline, New Smart Drugs, Media Viruses, Cyberfusion, Negativland.

Again, not that familiar with this issue cause they didn't include my very humorous writings in it forcing me to not read it all that much. I do like the cover though. I knew a guy back then who literally worshiped this cover with Deb Harry. He had an altar and everything. He should be out in a few years.

Featuring: Dee-Lite, Burroughs, Screamin' Memes, Feral Moons.

Over 15,000 copies of assorted Mondos were bought on Ebay and taken to Japan for storage. All of those were pulped when the storage fees could not be paid. There's the rarity thing again. Plus, Burroughs and Leary together? Who could resist such a psychotropic tag-team? I don't know what else to say, except... order this item.

Featuring:
Brian Eno, D'Cuckoo, Burroughs and Leary Together, Jim Morrison: Spoil the Rod and Despair.

Can't seem to find out why this one is so rare, but it is. Many of the people who worked on the magazine don't have copies, so that tells you something. Maybe it's a conspiracy? The Rollins and the Byrne pieces are quite good, though they could have used some HUMOR!

Featuring: Henry Rollins, David Byrne, Guy Kyser, Marc Ribot

I enjoyed the article on the DMT elves, knowing most of them personally by name. It had to do with $50 worth of Terence's mushrooms and a wager that I couldn't eat them all at once. This was what TM called, "an effective dose," a euphemism for "too many mushrooms." The effects were quite spectacular. I called in sick for the next two weeks. We published High Frontiers #1 shortly after that. Thanks for everything Terence...

The late Bruce Eisner and Peter Stafford - the brilliant authors and educators on all things mind-manifesting - created this reverent tribute to psychedelics a few years before High Frontiers. Peter turned me on to this project when we went to visit him in Santa Cruz in the early '80s as we were putting together the 2nd issue of High Frontiers. Thanks for everything Bruce, Peter...
